The series was maintained by the following succession of commands: Post of Columbus, Kentucky, May - June 1862; Central Division, Army of the Mississippi, June - September 1862; Dodge's Division, District of Corinth, 13th Army Corps, Army of the Tennessee, October - November 1862; District of Corinth, Department of the Tennessee, November - December 1862; District of Corinth, 17th Army Corps, Army of the Tennessee, December 1862 - January 1863; District of Corinth, 16th Army Corps, Army of the Tennessee, January - March 1863; 2nd Division, 16th Army Corps, Army of the Tennessee, March - August 1863; Left Wing, 16th Army Corps, Army of the Tennessee, August 1863 - November 1864; and thereafter by the Adjutant General's Office.

Grenville M. Dodge of Council Bluffs, Iowa, was a Civil War general; prominent national railroad surveyor and engineer; and U.S. Representative. Dodge conducted surveys for the Illinois Central, Rock Island (Mississippi to Missouri line), and the Union Pacific railroads before the Civil War. He was commissioned as Colonel with the 4th Iowa Volunteer Infantry in 1861 and promoted to Brigadier General of the United States Volunteers in 1862 and then Major General in 1864.
